Robert Hurt standing strong says NO to bogus spending cuts

WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congressman Robert Hurt (R-VA) today released the following statement after opposing H.R. 1473, the long term continuing resolution:

“Last November, the people of the 5th District sent a clear and urgent message that they want to see real change in Washington. They want to see an end to business as usual in our nation’s Capitol, and they want to see an end to the out of control government spending that threatens the very future of our country and slows our economic recovery.

“House Republicans have led the way in delivering on the message sent by the people by taking several responsible steps to cut spending to reduce our $14 trillion debt and $1.6 trillion deficit. However, the Democrat-led Senate and White House inexplicably have remained committed to spending money we don’t have.

“Indeed, it should be noted that the proposal before us today was an effort to clean up the mess left to the 112th Congress by the failed leadership of the President and the last Congress. Because of the continued failed leadership in the Democrat-controlled Senate and White House, I was unable to support the proposed compromise as being in the best interest of the people I represent.

“I look forward to quickly moving from talking about cutting billions in government spending to talking about cutting trillions in government spending, which we can do by adopting the Republican 2012 budget proposal. I look forward to continuing to work with our new House majority to cut government spending, to reduce our debt, and to ensure that we leave our children and grandchildren with a prosperous America.”
