McKelvey Says Hurt Personal Attacks
“Below the Belt”
-Hurt’s Record Tax Increase Vote Main Issue in Campaign -
Moneta, VA
Jim McKelvey, Republican candidate for Congress in the Fifth Congressional District, responded
today to State Senator Robert Hurt’s remarks while campaigning in Appomattox yesterday.
Hurt was upset about the comparison piece that showed that he had many similarities to current
Congressman Tom Perriello: “McKelvey’s campaign piece was negative and untrue and politics
as usual. We need some serious leaders. We need some grown-ups.”
McKelvey responded: “The real issue in this campaign is having the courage to stand up for what
you believe in. When Robert Hurt was given the choice of standing with fellow Republicans Bob
McDonnell, Bill Bolling and Ken Cuccinelli to vote against the largest tax increase in Virginia’s
history of $1.6 Billion Dollars, Robert Hurt instead chose to stand with Mark Warner and the
Democratic leadership, and voted for the tax increase. Robert Hurt already lacks the courage of
his convictions. We just can’t trust Robert Hurt’s judgment.”

I like McKelvey but how is Hurt’s response “below the belt”? I just got the 2nd attack piece on Hurt from McKelvey today and Hurt’s response (like much of the man himself) seems tame.
It makes McKelvey’s response here seem like an overreaction to basically nothing
JP. I agree looks like “hey we couldn’t think of anything to say but wanted to write something negative about hurt that for the gazillionth time mentioned Hurt’s tax increase vote”
People need to know Hurt’s record before they vote.
Yes they do. Too bad the only ones paying any attention already know that.
The Democrats would tear Hurt apart if he were to win the primary.People a vote for Hurt will send Perriello back to office.
Jp, I agree that there is no “below the belt” hit here. Hurt has consistently tried to take the high road when attacked by his competitors. I do know that all that changes come June 9th when he plans to come out strong against the real competition…..socialist Tom Perriello.
Now is the time for us all to come together and vote for our man/woman, and then earnestly support the winner 100% through the general election.
VaPatriot, saw your comment over at NAS. and yes, as with the above post, I agree.
Perriello must go. He is anti-capitalism, anti-American & very anti-5th District.
Kelly, will you be at the institute tomorrow night? if so, see you there!
va patriot: we’ll have to meet another time. I’m working the polls here in Kenbridge all day. will go home & totally collapse. I often walk with a cane & will be tired & need to rest.
where do you live?
the target is Perriello!
Candidates like Hurt are the very reason Republicans don’t get elected.
Republicans do get elected. No matter who we’re for today, we’ve all worked hard to get here. And starting tomorrow, we’re going to work like dogs to beat Perriello. Perriello is bad for the 5thDistrict. And people here know it.
On my way to the polls this morning, I heard a caller into WLNI saying he voted McKelvey. He said he was going to vote McPadden, but one of McKelveys workers at the polls told him McPadden was a lawyer. That decided my vote for me – and then I called everyone I could think of and told them who I voted for. I will continue to do so all day… I have been torn about who to vote for – but that caller this morning helped me make up my mind. I voted McPadden.
Before today’s election, we just witnessed a very low form of politics when Jim McKelvey, who is running for the Fifth District Primary, said in an automated phone call that he was endorsed by Virgil Goode when Goode originally said that he would not endorse any of the candidates. Now we hear that the McKelvey campaign claims that Mike McPadden is a lawyer. Jim McKelvey is a liar who cares about himself rather than the people. This may sound harsh, but it is people like Jim McKelvey who I absolutely despise! If McKelvey wins, Perriello will win in the General Election.
looks like it is Hurt who will be sending peri-osi packing in november.
i’m not in 5th district but Hurt better not be another peri-osi.
Watchdog, by now you know that 48.44% of the entire district’s voters preferred Hurt in a turnout that exceeded every other district in VA. Concerned voters in the 5th did indeed vote today and they gave Hurt a nearly 2 to 1 margin over his nearest of SIX competitors; why he even took Charlottesville City, home of the naah-then liberals in the 5th! Clearly, he IS the CONSENSUS candidate of the 5th district.
Now, let’s get b ehind him and send TP back to socialist hell!
Getting behind Hurt at the ballot and getting behind him door do door are two different things. Saying he is the “consensus” is a stretch. ONLY 8% of the voters turned out. My wife was in line behind some idiot that asked “hey you all got any info on these candidates”. 3 people really screwed up this race. I hope our memories are long ones.
I like Robert. As of this second I’ll vote for him in November. BUT the Tea Party (at least the LTP) will not endorse him. “Beating Tom” is not the be all end all of this mess. More to come and more commentary later.
review Perriello’s record: stimulus, GIVE act, cap ‘n trade, obamacare. Today we can ALL be against him & as the summer moves forward, more & more people can also be FOR Robert Hurt.
over at NotLarrySabato, they always say “you always complain about the same things re: Perriello”. Like Obamacare, cap ‘n trade, stimulus, GIVE act aint’ enough?
WD, my wife told me she was asked by the woman in front of her why six other people thought they should run against Hurt? She said, “don’t they know Robert Hurt is going to send Perriello packing for home?”
I suggest that it is a HUGE mistake to for you or any election observer to assume that voter motivations in the 5th run any much further than …. “send Perriello packing for home”! Anything more trhan that is a recipe for a big disappointment! Don’t be disappointed!
